Building my AIX/Power Home Lab : HMC/iSCSI/Power Saving and other tricks

I’m living in fear ! A few months ago I decided to quit my job for some reasons I can’t tell you in this blog. As many of you already know, you know exactly what you quit when you are leaving a place, but do not exactly know what you will get in the new one. Unfortunately this is the way France is doing today about jobs in general (just ask you why we do not have any Champion for Power Systems in France ?). Anyway this blog isn’t about politics but about technical stuffs. So I finally admitted that my professional path will not be a straight forward line, and with this comes the feeling that I needed to work and experiment some stuffs on my own without being at work. Here are some benefits I have to own my Power Server at home :

  • I’m the only developer of nmon2graphite. I really need a test platform to add new features and maintain nmon2graphite.
  • I can experiment things on my own without the fear to broke some production hosts, and to finally be fired. Example : I deliberately create a Shared Ethernet Adapter with wrong parameters to create a network loop (with some wireshark trace) to really understand why so many people are doing this mistake and how it really works. (I’m planning to post about this.)
  • I do not have to wait to experiment things, I’m the master/keeper in the house, no more firewall, dns problems, I can do what I want !
  • I can broke things and do it again and again. Need an IVM ? No problem less than one hour to build an IVM. Need an HMC … same thing.
  • It’s cool when some geek friends are coming home and I can say “Hey buddy, wanna play on my Power server ?”

I know this is a lost cause by I give it a try here. If some IBMers are reading this blog. My P520 Express is running a PowerVM standard edition, if someone can provides me a COD code for an enterprise edition it’ll be very cool (Am I dreaming ? Is the world really managed by money ?) . Remember that this blog is here to help the Power community, there is no business behind this blog. It’s free. I’m blogging in my free time, it’s a passion.


It’s a long way to the promise land.

Finding a Power Server at a cheap price is not easy. My first tough was to ask people who already buy one for their own use how they did it. I decided to ask Brian Smith who owns a few Power Systems : How did you get your servers ? He kindly answers to my question and told me to check on eBay or in governmental auctions. So I started to check eBay in the beginning of May 2013. In Europe prices were too expansives for my budget (no server cheaper than 5000€) ; so I decided to check in US if prices were cheaper. For price convenience my advice is to check for a Power 520 express or a Power710 express if you can afford to spend more money. Before buying anything always :

  • Ask for the Serial Number to check activated options, go on the IBM POD for this
  • Always ask for the PowerVM Edition. In my case my need is PowerVM Standard or Enterprise. Go on this page to check how to identify your PowerVM edition :
  • Always ask for adapters and disks shipped with the server. A lot of servers are sold without any adapter.
  • Always ask for power supply with the server. A lot of servers are sold without any power.
  • If you are planning to install dual Virtual I/O Server check if a split backplane is installed with the system (in my case I have no split backplane, and I’ll tell you how to setup dual Virtual I/O Server in this case.)
  • Check the price ! Don’t get ripped off !

After three months asking questions and checking eBay everyday. I finally found something interesting. The NeuComp Company (an IBM Business Partner) is selling refurbished Power Server on eBay. I wanted to thanks Katie K. (if you are reading this Katie tell me if I can give you real name :-)) for her kindness and for answering all my questions. If you are buying from a foreign country don’t make the same mistake as me and be aware of the custom fees (in my case around 15% of the total prices), seriously DHL guys are ruthless …


What about the Hardware Management Console ?

If you are planning to have a PowerVM Standard/Enterprise edition server it’s easier to manage it through an Hardware Management Console : two solutions :

  • Find an old hardware management console, on eBay it’s not to expansive and affordable.
  • Like Scott Vetter point in this post : The Power Systems Hardware Management Console as a virtual appliance ? it is possible to virtualize an Hardware Management Console, or an SDMC. Like him I cannot tell you here how to do it but it’s doable, and it’s not my case :-) (Don’t ask me for this one). Anyway if you want an SDMC you are totally in legality if you download and install the SDMC ova file and deploy it on a KVM or a VMware infrastructure.

Protect your ear. Check electricity bill : enable Power Save mode.

Do not forget to enable power saver mode if you are owning a Power6 or Power7 server. First : fans speeds will be decreased and the server will produce less noise. Second : you’ll notice a huge difference at the end of the month on your electricity bill if you are running the server 24 hours a day ! Notice that when the power saver mode on a managed system is enabled, the processor voltage and clock frequency are lowered to reduce the power consumption of the processors in the managed system.

  • Enabling Power Saver mode (and check with pmcycles command on a partition) :
  • # chpwrmgmt -m power520e-8203-EA4 -r sys -o enable [/root] # pmcycles -Mm
    CPU 0 runs at 3618 MHz
    CPU 1 runs at 3617 MHz
    CPU 2 runs at 3619 MHz

  • Disabling Power Save mode :

    CPU 0 runs at 4201 MHz
    CPU 1 runs at 4201 MHz
    CPU 2 runs at 4202 MHz
    CPU 3 runs at 4202 MHz

As you can see on the output above the processor speed was decreased from 4.2GHz to 3.6GHz. I do not have any recorder but I can swear that fans are decreasing their speed at the moment the command was typed on the Hardware Management Console. Power Saving mode is not a joke it really works.


Firmware update

The server was not shipped with the latest firmware level. If you are working in a big enterprise like me this kind of operations are performed by IBM Inspectors, so the last time I updated a firmware was a couple of months ago and I did it through the IBM Systems Director, this is not the kind of operation I’m used to do, so here is a quick reminder on how to do it :

  • First of all copy all the files (xml and sdd files included) you have downloaded with the new firmware on the Hardware Management Console :

Virtual I/O Server install through the Hardware Management Console.

To install my Virtual I/O Server I decided to use the new integrated Hardware Management Console feature. This feature allows you to install the Virtual I/O Server through the Hardware Management Console the first time you boot it. Unfortunately you need to have all NIM ports opened because it’s just a graphical interface to the old well known installios command based on the old nimol product and running on the HMC. What a shame I was dreaming of a full integrated installation without the need of bootp/NFS and so on. So I’m very disappointed about this new feature :-(.

  • You first have to download the Virtual I/O Server media to the Hardware Management Console, check you have enough space left on the HMC before importing images :
  • hmcimportvios

  • Wait until images are correctly uploaded to the Hardware Management Console :
  • hmcuploadimagewait

  • If images were correctly uploaded on the HMC, you’ll see it on the Virtual I/O Server image repository :
  • virtualioserverimagerepository

  • When you’ll boot your Virtual I/O Server the HMC will ask you if you want to install a Virtual I/O Server on it :
  • bootviosinstall

  • The Virtual I/O Server will boot and you’ll be asked for the IP address to use and the image you want to install, in this case set the HMC ip as NIM server (the HMC is a nimol server):
  • discoveringadapters

  • After this step the installation will begin and the output will be visible in the HMC window :
  • installhmc1

  • When the installation is finished you can check log output HMC window :
  • installhmc2

Need a cheap SAN : Use iSCSI

This is the trickiest part of this post. My Power Server was not shipped with a split backplane my only solution was to create an iSCSI target and to boot my Virtual I/O Server on iSCSI, the iSCSI target partition was created on an AIX lpar and I decided to use file backed luns for backup convenience (I just have to copy the file to save my Virtual I/O Server rootvg :-))

Creating target

Filesets for iSCSI target can be found on the AIX Expansion Pack DVD. You have to install these fileset on the iSCSI target before trying to configure it.

  • To create the target follow these steps :

  • To create lun follow these steps : In my case I choose to create file backed iSCSI lun. I use dd command to create the lun itself, and then add it to the iSCSI configuration :

  • Give a name to your initiator :

  • Modify the /etc/iscsi/targets file to add the name and port of the iSCSI target, then cfgmgr :

Boot on iSCSI

    If like me you decided to boot on iSCSI, follow the same steps as above to configure the target. Then boot you partition on SMS menu, begin the installation. The configuration of the iSCSI initiator is performed on the BOS installation menu, follow the steps below to configure it, and then boot on iSCSI :

  • When the menu comes up, choose Configure Network Disks (iSCSI) :

  • I had to change my iSCSI target ip address for a dumb reason, but after changing this on my lpars booting on iSCSI were not able to find their boot disk anymore. The only solution I found was to change the boot device NVRAM boot-device variable Open firmware prompt :

    About the HMC, in my opinion it is useless to buy one.
    Just download the ISOs then install it on a VM (KVM, esx..), i don’t know if it works well but it’s a way to reduce costs and big blue said that system director/HMC are designed for that.

      I agree with you, but I can’t publish this link in the comments. Do not forget that the Hardware Management Console is licensed by IBM and has to be buy and installed on an Hardware server. Installing it in a virtual environment is not supported. If I publish this link I may have some problem, do not forget that this website is for the community, and for IBM too, publishing this link is not a knowledge sharing but an how-to to hack the Hardware Management Console that’s why I had to delete it.

      I hope you’ll understand my situation and my point of view.

    also will these 2 hardwares be sufficient ?

    can i get the HMC in a virtual server as specified above, in that case do i still need the Synology-RackStation-RS812-Network-Storage-Server ?

      The Synology is just used has an iSCSI target, do not buy a Power at home if you have a question like this. First read the Redbooks and practice at work ….

  5. pSeries in general

    I agree on the last comment. pSeries boxes are not for someone who does not have a lot of experience not only with pSeries hardware but with a lot of “server” technology. And there are
    very very few people that can offer you help. Sadly 90% of so called System Admins today don’t
    even have a clue.

    With that said, if one just takes ones time even a p720/740 can be found for under $1,000 USD


    I would get one, if anything to emulate a production IBM environment. Look for the X series
    model number on Ebay etc. Get at least a CR4, CR4s can be found for < $100. CR6's are
    hard to come by.

  6. Good stuff, thank you for posting your story. I am the lucky recipient of…and for the price of “free”…the following gear:

    IBM HMC (CR4) with the IBM LCD and USB keyboard
    IBM DS4700 with an extra model 1812 disk shelf and about 9 TB of disk (a mix of 300 GB and 146 GB FC drives.)
    POWER5 9133-55A (550)

    The System p5 has 4 total cores @ 2.1 GHz (Power5+), 48 GB RAM (Happy Days), 8×146 GB Ultra320 drives and the RAID enablement card (with requisite dead cache battery), 2 FC HBA’s (4 Gb), 2-port GigE and onboard of course the 550’s onboard 2-port GigE, and finally a couple of PCI-X Ultra320 SCSI HBA’s which I probably will not use.

    I will most likely need to disconnect and/or remove one of the power supplies (not sure if I have to remove the 2nd processor card) as I do not have 220V AC anywhere but my laundry room. I don’t feel like purchasing a step-up transformer at this time.

    Now I have to figure out where I can hook it all up without triggering a divorce filing.

    No FC switch but eBay is good for that, but I can also do a direct connect once I obtain the proper cables.

      • Something to watch out for if you do find one is the age of the cache batteries. Each controller has one, and they last about around 9 or 10 years. You can find replacements online but they’re around $250 USD each, and I can’t tell if that’s for brand new or reconditioned batteries, or if they’re used. The price goes up from there as well, your mileage may vary. Mine have about 1000 days left on them.

        On my 9133-55A, the system backplane is reported as failed by the HMC, along with a power supply. I’ve tried both power supplies in each slot together and alone, with only one processor card plugged in (I’m using 115V AC at home.) Big bummer. Found a replacement system planar board for about $100 USD on eBay, and the 1475W AC power supplies for < $50 USD (each) so we'll see if I can get something up and running that can actually use the DS4700 and enable me to setup Dual VIOS as the Good Lord intended.

  7. Oh and on my p5 issue, it turns out I have to find a processor filler card (it’s apparently much more than a “blank”) to run it on 110-120V AC. Another bummer.

    • Hi Charles – interesting information you have here! Do you have any of the PDF technical documentation for the 9133-55A? I just bought one, and some of the service processor codes on the control panel elude me, and I’m now fearing I can’t run this box. Mine has 2 power supplies and two processor cards, and two hard drives.. does this unit really require 220VAC, or just two sources for 120VAC power?



      • As far as I know, it does require 220 if you’re running with both processor cards installed. Without the second processor card you need the terminator card in its place. Nothing I did would work, the unit detects 110 and if 2 cards are installed it will not power-on.

        As far as documentation, I know I’m late getting here but I didn’t know you replied back in April. Sure the docs are readily available and have a fair amount of information and, now, knowledge about the capabilities of the unit and what you can and can’t do with it.

  9. Hello. Very nice blog you have here. I’ve done something similar at home with a PS700 at home. I’m hoping you can offer some guidance to me regarding booting from NPIV virtual fibre channel. I built my own Fibre Channel SAN with ubuntu and ZFS. I setup a lpar with only one LUN via NPIV. I can install the OS onto the NPIV LUN, but upon reboot it fails to detect the LUN as boot device. Do you have experience with NPIV booting?

  10. Hello, it is probably a stupid question, but maybe you’ve heard something about it. I am wondering if someone has ever tried to somehow “hack” the pSeries firmware to enable inactive capabilities? My question comes from the fact that I own a couple of 520 machines without PowerVM and VIOS, so they are pretty useless (only one LPAR consuming all hardware).

  11. I have a p520 (latest firmware 350_166) without VIOS capability. I installed AIX to an iscsi network target (hosted on linux) and all I get now after the lpar restarts is “!EA012010 !” and it won’t boot. It did work the first couple times after installation, but now no more.

    I can always install to iscsi, but (aside from twice) never boot from it afterwards. What’s going on? The same settings in SMS were there when it worked as when it didn’t. A web search for the code turns up nothing.

  12. Hi, I have 9406-520 and i cannot get it to show me a login prompt. The server does boot up via the manual process but i cannot get a console session into it.
    There’s data on there that i need to get off but unfortunately i cannot get into the HMC or via a direct access console. I have reset the server processor card to put the HMC ip address back to default but I get nothing at all.

    I am new to this type of server but I just need a few quick answers.
    1. Should you be able to ping the HMC IP from a laptop connected directly to it on the same subject or is this secured?
    2. I suspect the service processor is at fault is there a way to prove this?

    any help with this would be much appreciated.



    • ad 1. SP responds on ICMP
      ad 2. Ensure you’re trying the correct IP. You can display it on LCD panel using code 30 (02, N->M into manual mode, then 30, then 3000 or 3001). Ensure you’re connected to the same port you’re trying to ping.

    • I forgot to ask one thing – what do you mean by “console”? OperationsConsole from iSeries Access software bundle? AFAIK 9406-520 is an iSeries, so you need either HMC, Twinax, or the above mentioned software.

    The activated POD option page returns “No matching activation code found.”
    Does that mean the machine has nothing activated or is the serial number invalid ?

    I only wish to run one OS (Linux), not interested in any VM/partitioning features.
    Would I still be able to run one OS with no features active ?

  16. I need an advise. I’m novice at Aix,but with so lon experiencia on linux, having complete five oficial IBM courses on administration. I would like to improve my abilities on AIX, but I’m unsure if buying a Power it’s the best way and also I don’t work right now with AIX machines but would like to. Can you tell me if buy a machines it’s a good decisión to improve? Some people at my job saying it makes no sense and call me freak.

    • Marcelino, start with IBM redbooks and IBM AIX Knowledge Center. Browse ebay for Power6 and Power7 hardware. You will certainly learn by experimenting with your own hardware. One challenge though; in the enterprise world you have SAN storage with reduntant Fiber Channel fabrics which becomes more costly to create at home, but not insane for older 4Gb hardware. Even 8Gb FC hardware has come down in price. Do your research before you start buying hardware.

    • That’s a lot of computer for a home lab. Do you really need 16 cores? Also you should consider the electrical requirements. The p750 is probably 240V. In my home in North America I have 120V and wouldn’t want to buy a system for a home lab that needs 240V.

      Look for a p710. It’s a 2U chassis. Less expansion than the p750, but more than ok for a home lab. Really depends on home much CPU and expansion capability you need.
